With the stunning desert southwest in it’s back- ground and the lights, sounds and fun of Las Vegas less than 30 minutes away, Primm Valley Resort and Conference Center served as an ideal host to the 2009 United States Earth Pageants.

The 2009 national pageant brought together 58 dedicated, well-informed, environmentally savvy beauties from coast-to-coast, all seeking the crowns and titles of Miss Earth and Miss Teen Earth United States. The United States Earth Pageant is an event that embraces all the beauty of pageantry yet lends its support to a worthy cause—the protection and preservation of our environment.

Prior to arriving at the 2009 national pageant, delegates were active in their own communities and state, demonstrating that each of us can truly make a difference, one beauty at a time. They took part in park beautifications, removed litter and debris from local rivers/lakes, streets and highways; and partnered with local recycling centers. They went into local schools, reading to elementary school kids, informing them about the environment, how they can do their part and distributed the pageant’s coloring book “The Earth has a Fever.” They created infomercials, joined forces with local and national organizations such as “Clean the World,” “The Sierra Club” and “Keep America Beautiful.” They participated in numerous Earth Day events, created their own foundations, appeared on local television, attended Green Expos, visited with local city officials and helped out local charitable organizations.

During the four-day event, the national delegates took part in numerous activities and appearances, all focused on educating and advocating for a more eco-friendly, “green” lifestyle. The pageant and events focused on the three R’s - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Upon arrival the delegates went through their official registration, fittings for pageant wardrobe along with clothing for the spe-

cial fashion show and their official photo shoot. The official welcome dinner and orientation was held later that evening, followed by rehearsals, completing their first full day at the national pageant.

The next morning, delegates were surprised with a visit to a local Savers Thrift Store. Delegates were given one hour and a budget of $10 to select an outfit representing her own personal style. These outfits served as their official opening number outfit and as a reminder that we do not need to spend a great deal of money to be fashionable and yet, we can still do our part to reduce, reuse and recycle. Following the conclusion of the national pageant, a donation of all extra unused pageant clothing was made to Savers Thrift store on behalf of the 2009 national delegates.

Returning back to the Primm Valley Resort, the delegates, parents, family and friends were treated to a special make-up seminar. Delegates were provided with insight on how to minimally apply makeup for that natural, glowing look. Nancy Danley, mother of Jessica Danley, Miss Earth Michigan, was selected to have a complete makeover while all 58 delegates watched.

Next up for the national delegates was the fashion show held at the Outlet Mall of Nevada, which featured sustainable, eco-friendly clothing by three talented designers: Victor Vega, Francisco Perez and Elizabeth Calderon and Restore clothing, a sustainable clothing line, where each of the 58 delegates had the opportunity to walk the runway wearing clothing from many of the stores within the mall.

After three days of fun-filled exciting events, it was time for the all important judges interviews. Each delegate had one and one half minutes to speak with the entire panel of judges. The judges scored the delegate on her communication skills, her ability to express her thoughts and ideas, her confidence and personality.
